Abstract

The goals of the Region 4 Science Collaborative are to: provide high quality professional development (PD) and field experiences with accompanying resource materials; increase teacher and student understanding of science concepts related to matter, and their accompanying laboratory/field process skills; increase appropriate strategies for ELLs; provide Science Teacher Mentors (STMs) opportunities to attend science conferences held in Texas; and provide teachers with opportunities to create professional networks across various school districts. The Region 4 Science Collaborative will train 35 STMs. The Region 4 STMs will receive an average of 100 hours of PD. In addition, each STM will recruit 1 Cadre Member (CM) resulting in a minimum of 36 CMs that will obtain 12 hours of professional development during the 2017-2018 school year. The Region 4 Science Collaborative will target elementary and middle school science teachers. Priority will be given to immersion campuses, as well as teachers of high minority student populations. All STMs will be required to attend a two-week summer institute and will have the opportunity to complete 64 hours of professional development. The summer institute will be centered around the goals outlined above. STMs will be required to take a pre-test and post-test over matter. The test will be created by the Texas Regional Collaboratives (TRC). To assess the effectiveness of the Region 4 Science Collaborative, the results of the post-tests will be used to measure growth in teacher content knowledge. All STMs will document their collaborative experiences in an interactive notebook, this will include instructional strategies they have learned and how they have incorporated those best practices into their classroom. STAAR data will also be utilized to determine the growth of student achievement.
